Charles Elwood Yeager was born February 13 1923 in Myra, West Virginia. He enlisted as an aircraft mechanic at the start of the WW2 then graduated pilot training as a Flight Officer, flying the P51 Mustang. After the war Yeager became a test pilot, famously becoming the first to break the sound barrier, October 1947 in the Bell X1. He continued a 60 year flying career in Germany and Vietnam. He was once quoted, "the first jet I ever saw, I shot it down!"
